Audio File Formats

 Audio File Format

A format to store digital audio (audio recording or audio data) on a computer system.

The audio coding formats may be in compressed or uncompressed formats.

Uncompressed Audio Formats:

WAV: Waveform audio file format (Wave or Wav) developed by IBM and Microsoft in the late 80s.

AIFF: Audio Interchange File Format developed by Apple in the late 80s.

Compressed Audio Formats

Audio compression is performed in two ways:

1. Lossy Compression
2. Lossless Compression

Lossy Compressed audio formats are:

MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio layer 3) or (MPEG - 2 Audio Layer 3)

M4A (MPEG-4 Audio)

WMA (Windows Media Audio)

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding)

ADTS (Audio Data Transport Stream) is a container format specified by MPEG-4 Part 3 for audio data, intended to be used for audio streaming.

AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate)

OGG

Lossless Compression audio formats are:

FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec)
ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec)

Coding: It is a device or program which compresses the audio for transmission and decompresses the audio upon received.

Note: MPEG stands for Moving Picture Experts Group and was established in 1988 by ISO (International Organization for Standardization).

MPEG is a multimedia format that encodes and supports audio, video, subtitle, and still images.

Why know the audio formats and the conversion process?

When we record audio interviews on our smartphones, most of the time, the formats of those recorded interviews are not supported by the Audio/Video Editing software so we need to perform the conversion of our audio recordings.

For audio/video production we need to have our audios in very common formats like MP3, WMA or WAV
but
our phones record audio in AAC, OGG, 3GPP, AMR or any other format.

How to convert audio recordings?

There are two methods to convert audio recording formats into mp3.

i. Online:

ii. Offline: Using software (Any Audio Converter or VLC )

Note: Before the conversion process, audio files should be transferred to the computer, using Data Cable, Bluetooth, WhatsApp Web, NFC (Near Field Communication), Email attachment or USB drive using an OTG adapter.

Online Conversion:
